GALLERY DOORS SWING WIDE AS NEW ORLEANS FALLS FOR ART!

It may well be the annual defining moment for the visual arts in NEW ORLEANS,

and the timing, of course, is near perfect. In that tiny window of opportunity

that is fall in New Orleans, galleries throughout the city join forces in one

massive art opening known as Art for Art's Sake. This year's Art for Art's

Sake-affiliated festivities stretch out over four days , but the centerpiece

is still the Oct. 4 citywide celebration of art.



On Saturday, Oct. 4, gallery openings stretch from Magazine Street,

the Warehouse Arts District and the French Quarter to the Contemporary Arts

Center, lasting from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Also during that time period is the

spotlight on Julia Street Galleries, which features more than 18 galleries all

in one area.



Enjoy free continuous shuttle bus service between Magazine Street and the CAC

to maximize your Art for Art's Sake experience.



"THE FOLK ART OF MOSE TOLLIVER"



One of the featured art at THE ANTON HAARDT GALLERY Exhibit opening October 4 are paintings by folk artist Mose Tolliver. A whimsical painting titled "Self-Portrait" is among various paintings and decorated objects from the

artist on view at this years Art for ART SAKE at the THE ANTON HAARDT

GALLERY on 2858 Magazine Street.Anton Haardt will give New Orleans an opportunity to view a collection of paintings from various years in his career, and will having a book signing for her new book:MOSE T FROM A TO Z:THE FOLK ART OF MOSE TOLLIVER.





Mose T ( the name that he most popularly was known by) had titles are almost as colorful as his paintings- Sprupe Charlie,Tico Bird, Jickety Jack Jim , and even his more risqué titles like Diana Lo Satisfying her own selfŠ..



"Is this art ?", you might say- Well some sure think it is.Robert Bishop an

early director of Museum of American folk art ,said of Mose Tolliver¹s work "You can hang Mose Tollivers paintings next to a Picasso and they are of equal value"Š..



On Exhibit at Haardt¹s 2858 Magazine location will be an array of

Tolliver paintings. Anton is a Photographer as well and will have on display

photographs she has taken of Mose. Anton , from Montgomery, lived near

the Tolliver home, so she often visited him over the last 30 years

choosing regularly what she thought to be his best paintings.





Anton explained:

"The majority of Mose's paintings are of human figures and self-portraits.

He has painted many portraits of himself easily identifiable by the

crutches, dark face and his signature hat.His work has been in various important exhibits such as Passionate Visions in NOMA- and his work hangs at the prestigious Ogden Museum. His private collectors are various- One of his

hand painted eggs was on display at The White House Easter celebrations one

year- He has even gone to Washington and met then Lady of the White House

Mrs.Nancy Reagan. President Clinton is even a Mose collector as are other

celebrities-Mary Steenburgen has purchased from Anton Œs Gallery several

Mose T for her husband Ted Danson as gifts.Mary even gave Anton a quote

for her new book on Mose. The actress Ms. Steenburgen says:

" Hillary and President Clinton bought me my first Mose Tolliver-It hangs in

a prominent spot of my home and every day I pass by it enjoying it more

each dayŠ.That¹s Art!"

The paintings of Christopher Moses embody a longstanding and ongoing investigation into the relationship between the visual and the actual--between that which the eyes see and that which constitutes reality. Moses¹ path as a visual artist and the overall thematic thrust of his work may have less to do with the artistic precedents in his own family (his father worked as a commercial artist, and both parents were hobbyist painters) than with the special nature of his visual experience of the world from the time he was born. Despite childhood surgery and other medically prescribed procedures aimed at correcting the problem, Moses¹ eyes have persisted in showing him a doubled version of whatever is in front of them when they¹re open--the "seeing double" that those with "normal" vision can experience voluntarily by crossing our eyes or consuming far too much alcohol. One result of Moses¹ inherent, evidently uncorrectable double vision is his lack of trust that what he sees corresponds to reality. Although he professes to approach his art spontaneously and intuitively, without a preconceived plan as to what he wants a new painting to look like, many if not all of the images he has created in recent years manifest or allude to this fundamental questioning of the visual/actual relationship noted above--a good indication of the extent to which this fundamental and ultimately philosophical question has permeated his psyche. Haardt received her BFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 1971 .Her father was a land developer and named the streets where they lived -Anton says: "I was raised on the corner of Anton and Haardt Drive and still did not know where I belonged-- instead I felt like an alien who had somehow been dropped from a passing spaceship into this southern terrain."



By age twenty she had left her familiar southern roots- heading for the Amazon..She was drawn to the primitive in her art and in her thirst for primitive culture- ---traveling by backpack for months over the years on end through the jungles of Ecuador Bolivia- Brazil---- trekking in search of Jivaro Indians... huichol peyote shamans......and later in her own backyard of Alabama where she met mentor/friend/folk artist Juanita Rogers- and Mose Tolliver..Meeting artist Chris Moses in Yelapa Mexico where she had leased a house in 1986- they became a couple and lived a portion of each year in their home in the jungle terrain of Yelapa where ocelots, iguanas, frigate, and the dreaded scorpian roamed in abundance. There was no electricity..nor roads--

Haardt ,with no reserve, states firmly that she is not a folk artist nor does she feel comfortable with outsider artist terminology--- she prefers to remain uncategorized. "Through the rescue of junk in my art I have created visual mixed media images which I pirate, personalize, then privatize to create a mutated vocabulary of imagery which frames life on the verge of extinction in a sort of post-modern pentimento. The role of woman, love, relationships reside in a metaphorical corner of my brain bordering on obsession. Whether it be in the form of the hand,heart, flower or domestic iron as icon, I ruminate over the themes of ticking time or the domestic role of a wife and woman amidst the poetic jungle beat . see more art at www.antonart.com
