I visited New Orleans in 1998 for a computer training class. I got off early and had a day and 1/2 to get to know this place. I decided that a trip down the Mississippi River would be the best way to do that, so I took the boat from the Zoo to Riverwalk. It was a hot, humid afternoon and I fell asleep on the boat! The guys who were helping us on and off laughed when I told them that I was trying to experience New Orleans in one afternoon, and said that falling asleep on the river was a pretty good place to start. I went through the zoo, went through Riverwalk, got caught in a really incredible downpour with all kinds of rain, rode the trolley from uptown to downtown a few times, ate a lot of red beans and rice and popeye's chicken, and have to say I truly enjoyed myself. The place is such a mixture of danger and safety, evil and good, dark secrets bubbling under all that mud and beautiful people walking on top of it. Would I come back? Sure - I have friends there now. So my experience would be broader than it was then. But I did enjoy it - the rain, the river, the singing road crews, and the food.
