My husband and I had our 3rd trip to the US in 1991. We had planned to drive through New Mexico and Colorado but the weather wasn't right for 2 bronzed Aussies. They had several feet of snow ....so on the recommendation of friends we hopped on a plane to N'Orleans. It was wonderful. They'd told us about beignets, pralines, the oyster bars (superb!) hurricanes, gumbo, and all the other delicious delicacies of the French Quarter. We wasted no time in tasting them all. We had a great tour of the bayous and some southern mansions.... If only we hadn't eaten 2 dozen oysters before we went to the restaurant! The shops were beautiful and the culture unique. It's a real gem, and made all the more enjoyable because of the fact that it wasn't a planned visit..... We'll go back one day. We still haven't stopped thinking about the oysters !
