I went to N.O. the summer of 1991 for a 3-4 day convention, booked myself a few extra days, because I wanted to see the city, and figured it would be my only chance. Met a fine jazz musician in the Quarter - so I fell in love with both the man and the city and moved there a year later. What caught me that first visit? Pink & white shotgun houses, the Bayou winding around near Whole Foods Market, strangers stopping to say Good Morning, the never ending explosion of color and charming buildings. When I moved there it just continued - my first Jazz Fest, entering through the Gate for the artists, our mailman Owens stopping his truck 1/2 block away when he saw us 'cause he had something for us, being able to get a suntan in April when everyone up north still had their heat on, my first Muffuletta... sitting outside in the tiny courtyard at True Brew near the Fairgrounds, riding the streetcar to work, Miss Viola saluting me "I see you takin the dog for a walk today!", knowing that after Christmas was over, Mardi Gras would start, learning that Mardi Gras Indians were not really Indians, that Mardi Gras was a family holiday rather than a drunken brawl, the fried potatoes at the Blue Bird Cafe, the Pie in the Sky, and in fact just eating! ........ The 1st year after I left I missed N.O. so much, I was afraid to go back and visit. But guess what - Jazz Fest here we come!
