I was born & raised around New Orleans and lived there for 25 years. One year, while I was still living there, the New Orleans Police were threatening their usual "Mardi Gras strike". Each year, the strike had been settled & Mardi Gras went on as usual. However, one year, Mayor Morial decided to call their bluff. He told the police to go back to work or he would" cancel Mardi Gras". He did just that!! He withdrew all parade permits for the City of New Orleans, thus not allowing any parades to take place within the city. All of the krewes were running to other parishes to hold their parades. When Mardi Gras day came, I went out to Jefferson Parish & caught the parades out there. One of the funny memories of that day was seeing striking New Orleans Police out there, along the parade route, dressed as PIGS!!!!! It was a sight to see!! Remember it well! Aside from the police strike in 1979, the war years were the only time New Orleans didn't throw its big party!
