Cities are like people, I think; you either have a chemistry with them or you don't. If New Orleans were a person, we'd be soulmates. So much so that after my first visit in October, 1971, I started planning a move there from New York. It took 3 years to the month and I arrived without a job or apartment and knowing no one. Everything that could go right did and the next 7 years were the happiest of my life. Career considerations led to a move in 1981, but I still return regularly to recharge my soul. Oh, to be walking through the Quarter, deserted in the early morning, headed for the Cafe Du Monde, or to be toasting the sunset from the deck of Joe's Crab Shack on Lake Pontchartrain! More so then the what is the who, the very special people that call this city home. I take consolation in knowing I left there having acquired life long friends and the love of my life .I've enjoyed sharing other people's memories of this special place.
