City of a Million Dreams at Historic French Quarter Museum

Film Explores City’s Rich Culture, Burial Traditions & Race Relations

Jason Berry’s acclaimed film, City of a Million Dreams, will be shown at the Beauregard-Keyes Historic House & Garden on Thursday, February 17, at 6 pm.  A panel discussion with author/filmmaker Berry, clarinetist Dr. Michael White, and choreographer Monique Moss will follow the viewing. Space is limited and tickets must be pre-purchased at www.bkhouse.org.

City of a Million Dreams, which was filmed over 22 years, explores race relations at a tearing time in American life.  The film draws from the 2018 book of the same title by Jason Berry and follows burial traditions as a lens on the evolution of New Orleans and the unique and resilient culture of our city.

“We are beyond thrilled to host the showing of this important work and to welcome such esteemed panelists for what promises to be an insightful, compelling discussion”, said Annie Irvin, executive director. “We invite members of the community to visit our museum and to take advantage of culturally rich events such as this.”

Affectionately known to neighbors and supporters as “BK House”, the historic property at 1113 Chartres Street, has been inhabited by a variety of individuals and families since 1826. Programming has evolved far beyond guided tours and features lectures and demonstrations, crafting and art classes, concerts, cultural displays, and seasonal events, including a ArKIDtecture Summer Camp for children.

The February 17th program will take place from 6-9 pm.  Tickets are $15 per person and must be pre-purchased at www.bkhouse.org.  Per City of New Orleans COVID-19 Guidelines, everyone in attendance must wear a mask and anyone 5 years of age or older must provide proof of at least one dose of an approved COVID vaccine or negative PCR/antigen test within 72 hours.

More about City of a Million Dreams:

Famous the world over, jazz funerals have origins shrouded in mystery.  Deb Cotton, an African American and observant Jew, leaves 'hard-hearted Hollywood' for New Orleans, and becomes a chronicler of the parading clubs spawned by 19th century burial societies. Her zeal for the city grows as she becomes a blogger for Gambit Weekly, adopting the handle 'Big Red Cotton.' As Deb explores her adopted culture, Dr. Michael White, a prolific clarinetist and New Orleans native, plays 'the widow’s wail' on his clarinet, a cry of lamentation in the funeral marches.

White’s transcendent music also includes joyous peals for the soul’s cutting-loose, which happens when the band leaves the cemetery, followed by dancers in what New Orleanians call 'the second line.' Risen in the ranks of brass bands, White, too, is on a journey of self-discovery, seeking clues about his ancestor who played at the dawn of jazz. White says of jazz funerals: 'For someone dealing with American racism and trying to figure out your place in this life…you can be transformed into another world that really sets you free.'"

About Beauregard-Keyes Historic House & Garden: Located at 1113 Chartres Street, across from the Old Ursulines Convent, BK House was built in 1826 and purchased by noted author Frances Parkinson Keyes in 1948 and restored under her loving care.  Events such as these, along with grants, donations, and other fundraising events help generate funds needed for on-going restoration and future capital improvement projects.
