French Quarter
No doubt you have heard about Bourbon Street and its adult nightlife excitement (which should be avoided if traveling with children). But the French Quarter offers so much more than one famous street name. 18th Century buildings are now home to countless art galleries, antique shops, unique retail boutiques, and world-famous restaurants (www.NewOrleansRestaurants.com).
Take a walk in and around Jackson Square and enjoy the historic setting of the St. Louis Cathedral, the most photographed landmark of New Orleans, nestled between two Louisiana State Museums, the Presbytere, and the Cabildo. On the opposite side borders the mighty Mississippi River, with the oldest apartment buildings in the US, the Pontalba, parallel on the other two sides. On any given day, the four blocks of wrought iron fence along Jackson Square are home to local artists at work, street mimes, and musicians all for your enjoyment. https://www.experienceneworleans.com/jackson-square.html
Directly across from Jackson Square, enjoy Café au lait and Beignets (Coffee with hot milk + square donuts with powdered sugar) at the Café du Monde. (Our personal favorite is www.CafeBeignet.com at 311 Bourbon St. and 334-B Royal St.) On the river side of the Square, horse drawn carriages are waiting for those who want a buggy driver’s guided tour of the French Quarter. The Toulouse St. Wharf, behind the JAX Brewery, is steps away from the Square and home to the authentic Steamboat NATCHEZ (www.SteamboatNatchez.com). The 2-hour river cruise offers a great narration, live jazz music, a New Orleans style lunch, and a unique opportunity to tour the engine room of one of only six steamboats in America. The nighttime Dinner/Jazz Cruise is the home of the world-famous Dukes of Dixieland.
Other nearby attractions that you don’t want to miss include:
Audubon’s Aquarium of the Americas (https://www.neworleanscoupons.com/coupons/attractions-audubon-aquarium.html) along the riverfront and a few miles upriver is the world-class Audubon Zoo…easy access to the Zoo via the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar.
And be sure to include in your visit time to take a Swamp Tour (https://www.ExperienceNewOrleans.com/swamp.html) and a Plantation Tour (https://www.ExperienceNewOrleans.com/louisianaplantationhomes.html).
