French Market

Farmer’s Market, Shopping, Dining & More

When you visit the world-famous French Market District, you step back into amazing history as it blends with today’s vibrant French Quarter culture.  Long before the French and Spanish found their way to New Orleans, the French Market was a Native American trading post on the Mississippi River.  Officially founded in 1791, the trading post would grow into an international marketplace with stalls manned by immigrants from Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. The air was filled with the scents of exotic spices and the sounds of languages from all over the world.

Today, the French Market spreads out across six city blocks jam-packed with a farmer’s market, a flea market, diverse shops, diverse restaurants, spectacular festivals and live music.

Cajun, Creole and Traditional Dining

If you didn’t come here to sample the out-of-this-world cooking, you’re in the wrong city. Food is as much a New Orleans tradition as jazz and the Saints. Your trip to the French Market must include some indulgence. The Original French Market Restaurant & Bar has great Creole and Cajun food and balcony with a view to experience it all.

Shop, Shop & Shop Some More

There’s nothing “strip-mallish” about shopping in the French Market. Whether you’re after exquisite gift baskets, original art, kitchen accessories, confections, books with local inspiration, vintage statues, handsome apparel and so much more, you won’t have trouble finding it.

Dutch Alley

The lovely pedestrian plaza at Dumaine and St. Phillip Streets is named after former New Orleans Mayor Ernest N. Morial whose nickname was “Dutch.” The area includes historic statues, a performance tent, and the Dutch Alley Artist’s Co-op. You’ll also find a visitor center for the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park here.

Festivals and Events

From big music and food festivals to small group exercise classes and activities for kids, there’s always something happening at the French Market.  View their calendar of events.

Any time of year, you’ll find something fun and entertaining.   You may choose to check out a walking tour showcasing Cajun food and music, or one that brings visitors face to face with New Orleans Jazz and the history of the Market.  You can also just stroll down the riverfront.
