The lights dim, and the curtain raises. It’s show time! We were lucky to be invited to the season grand opening at Le Petit, where we laughed so hard our cheeks hurt!
The play—Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike—is about three middle-age siblings and a boyfriend (ok, more like boy toy!) Set in rural Pennsylvania, the play details our need as humans to be happy and the absurd lengths we’ll sometimes go to reach the elusive state, but it was the over-the-top way the characters carried the show that left us laughing for days.
Vanya and his (adopted) sister, Sonia, stayed home to take care of their ill parents while Masha marched off to find success as an internationally known actress (the star of slasher movies. When Masha returns home for a visit (with boy toy Spike in tow), everyone realizes their own discontent with life (except, of course, Spike—who only seems concerned with getting all but naked) While the plot takes the (mostly) predictable course with the “there’s no place like home” ending, you’ll be entertained from beginning to end with cheeky, quick-witted lines and excellent acting.
The show runs through September 20 and is definitely a “must see” (and not only because you’ll see Spike the boy toy in his undies!).
We’re looking forward to the whole 2014-2015 Le Petit season though—with Peter and the Starcatcher opening November 7, Jesus Christ Superstar kickoff the new year January 16, dinner with Friends taking the state March 20, and Merrily We Roll Along closing out the season beginning May 22.
